Sorby Adams

Sorby Adams is based on the philosophy that great wines are made in the vineyard. The cool climate of Barossa’s Eden Valley, its high altitude, ancient soils, cold wet winters and a temperate summer and autumn, combine to produce low yielding but intensely flavoured wines with outstanding natural acidity.

About Sorby Adams

The journey commenced in 1980 when Simon, fresh out of Year 12 at school in Adelaide accepted a vintage role with family-owned Yalumba Winery in the Barossa. What started as a 3 month casual position progressed to a career with Yalumba and into the role of Red Winemaker at age 26 and then Chief Winemaker at 33.

During his 20 at Yalumba he was instrumental in establishing the fine reputation that Yalumba enjoy for their premium red wine brands being The Reserve, The Octavius, The Signature and The Menzies and he also oversaw the commencement of “Voss Vineyards” in Napa Valley, California in the early 90’s.

In 1996 he bought the original Lehmann family vineyard in Angaston (originally planted in 1932 by the late Peter Lehmann’s father Pastor Franz Julius Lehmann) and then in 2006 the Mt McKenzie “Jellicoe” vineyard was purchased.

Today our fruit is sourced from not only these two vineyards but we also have a range of growers typifying what is so wonderful about Barossa vignerons.

The Region

Sorby Adams Wines is based on the philosophy that great wines are made in the vineyard. Winemaker Simon Adams sources fruit from his own Eden Valley vineyards high in the Barossa Hills and also from a selection of wonderful growers around the Barossa.

Eden Valley

The cool climate of Barossa’s Eden Valley, its high altitude, ancient soils, cold wet winters and a temperate summer and autumn, combine to produce low yielding but intensely flavoured wines with outstanding natural acidity. World renowned for Riesling, it also produces superior quality Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.

Lehmann Vineyard

Nestled in the Barossa Hills in Eastern Eden Valley, Sorby Adams’ Home Vineyard is one of the oldest in the region, originally planted in 1932 by the Lehmann family, a name synonymous with quality Barossa wine. Located in Simon Adams’ own backyard, the Home Vineyard is a tribute to the wine region’s heritage. Its gnarly twisted vines are nurtured by Simon to showcase Eden Valley Shiraz.

Williamstown Vineyard

Located on the outskirts of Williamstown this cool climate site has mature Pinot Gris as well as some 70 year old Grenache.

Jellicoe Vineyard

Situated in Eden Valley’s “Golden Triangle” at Mt McKenzie, famous for old vine Riesling, the Sorby Adams Jellicoe Vineyard includes nearly 25 acres of mature vines entering their fourth decade. The vineyard epitomises the traditional strengths of the Barossa’s Eden Valley wine region and includes Riesling, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon.
